Today is the first of my "Vintage Inspired Bridal Gown Design Days" - I have my collection of vintage wedding books and fashion history books together to bring along for my brides to flick through for inspiration and I'm looking forward to a lovely afternoon of chatting about vintage fashion and working through vintage inspired design ideas for the select group of brides coming along!
For my vintage pattern of the week I thought I would share this little gem:

This is a gorgeous 50s gown that as you can see works well as both a floor length gown for more formal weddings or a tea length gown for something a little less formal. The surplice sweetheart bodice works really well for the more busty bride and as it is an empire line (the skirt starting from a seam just under the bust) it really adds length for shorter brides.... having said that it is still a gorgeous style for a taller bride.
Although it could be made in a lovely dupion silk I think it would also look stunning in a high quality duchess silk satin that has a lovely matte sheen to it and quite a bit of weight to the fabric.
I think the thing I love the most about this pattern though is the gorgeous lace jacket with the built in "hoodie" that is such a stunning alternative to a veil and I'm really not sure why the modern vintage bride hasn't started to go crazy about this look. I know this is a style that is on the cards for me to make up in the new year when I'm back in action after maternity leave.
