Wedding Trends: Donut wedding cakes

More and more couples are steering away from the traditional cake and moving towards alternates that can be served with a little more ease.
These new trends are of course not vintage traditions but they can work well as a bit of a fusion of old and new world.

Donuts served instead of cake is a super fun idea for a simple dessert or a little something served after the meal with coffee and would work really well in a cute retro 50s style wedding that was reminiscent of a 50s diner / milk bar.  They would also work well for those planning a vintage carnivale / old world circus theme.

So many wedding reception venues are now charging a "cakeage" fee for cutting up a traditional cake and serving it on their plates.  As someone in the wedding industry I can understand that this all takes time and adds to the washing up required etc but it really frustrates me when you are given a price for a reception and then there are all these "additional charges" where things like cakeage can creep in.  I just wish they would factor it into their price per head in the first place so that couples aren't left with the bad taste in their mouth of being charged extra to cut a cake.  Traditionally this is all part of a wedding so therefore should just be part of the service.  Anyways, that's my rant about that and here is a way to avoid those extra charges (particularly if you are happy to use some lovely paper napkins instead of using the venues crockery to serve them).

With cakes such as the donut tower, there could still be a small cutting cake at the top of the tower which can be used for all of the obligatory cake cutting photos and then kept for either a first anniversary or baby christening and guests can then come and help themselves to a donut instead of traditional cake.

With all of the creative donuts these days you can even incorporate your colours in the frosting and choose fillings that are special to you and your partner to add a personal touch.

For those of you who follow my blog you may have also noticed that one of my own brides had donuts instead of a cake at her wedding here
