Finally I have found some time to take pictures of my Melbourne Cup dress. I was madly putting this together the weekend before the big day along with a cute black felt pillbox hat with a large felt flower at the back (sorry I haven't taken pictures of that yet). Excuse the crumpled skirt - I took these pictures post celebrations while awaiting a visit to the dry cleaners!
As you may have read from my previous post, I decided on using the Ava bodice from my ready to wear collection but instead of the floor length full circle skirt I made a half circle skirt (which gives a bit of fullness but not as much as a full circle skirt) that finished just below my knees. I also decided to add some shoulder straps for something different.
I made the dress from "Emerald" dupion silk with the contrasting bust pieces in black and a matching fine black belt that was covered in dupion silk.
To really add to the fullness you could easily put a black petticoat underneath this dress, but for Melbourne Cup this would have been too much so I just wore it as is and that was enough "skirt swoosh" for me!
The camera flash is a little full on in my little work room so here is a picture without the flash (sorry its quite blurry!)
This version of the Ava dress can be made in silk white, ivory or champagne for a lovely short 50s style wedding dress or in a wide range of colours for 50s inspired bridesmaid dresses / party dress.
This dress is available in standard size which can be shipped worldwide or made to measure inclusive of in person fittings.
